I have been one acquainted with the night

Photo

I have run out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outrun the furthest city light.

I have run down the saddest city lane.
I have run past the dogs on their walk
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to be exclaim.

I have stood still and stopped the pain of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But I ran on and did not look back or ask why;
And further still at an unearthly height,
A luminary lighthouse set against the sky

Proclaimed that this run was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
